Short breaks

September is a good month for city breaks. We wouldn’t recommend you go too far south unless you really enjoy the heat - Istanbul, Cairo and Marrakech are probably best left until October – although it’s a great time for trekking in Morocco.
               Holiday suggestions for September

However, Venice is wonderful in September once the summer crowds have started to disperse. Kirker Holidays has a great selection. And it’s a great time to explore the art galleries, tapas bars and pavement cafes of the Spanish capital, Madrid.

Other wonderful cities in Europe include Dubrovnik in Croatia, Palma, the stylish capital of Mallorca and Sorrento for Neopolitan style.

Late in September is a great time to visit the holy sites of Jerusalem.

Germany offers something different, from the Gothic architectural of Cologne to the buzzing streets and glorious museums of Berlin. Other options including the Bavarian charm of Munich and historic Dresden.

Although it’s not a firm fixture on the tourist map of Europe, the Latvian capital of Riga is an exciting city break destination with grand architecture, buzzing bars and restaurants – and low, low prices. Also recommended is Kiev, capital of the Ukraine, and Budapest in Hungary. Both are fascinating, beautiful cities and easy on the wallet.

You can avoid airports and take a city break by rail to the likes of Paris, Brussels, Bruges or Amsterdam. You can even get as far as Venice on a super-fast TGV. See the latest special offers.

Just across the English Channel, the Pas de Calais is a neglected area of France. We heartily recommend Auberge d’Inxent, a charming hotel with superb food just a short drive from the ferry port.

If you love your food, how about taking a cookery course in the seaside town of La Rochelle or the city of Lyon. The courses run over three or four days and combine classes in a professional kitchen with visits to local food markets, wine tastings and the chance to dine at classic bistros and brasseries. See prices.

Portugal’s Douro Valley is an unspoilt beauty, best seen from the deck of a river cruiser. Set off from the historical city of Porto where you can tour the famous Port lodges and sample wonderful seafood.
