It’s a great time to visit America

September is a great month to visit America: high season has passed and temperatures are off their summer highs, but you’ll still find hot sunny weather at the beaches and lakes.

Decide whether you want to stay in one place, drive yourself in a rental car (or motorhome), take an escorted tour (typically in a luxury coach) or take a two-centre or three-centre holiday (for example, you can combine city, ranch and beach).
                  America in September

One of the most popular escorted itineraries is this two-week coach tour of California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada that takes in Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Los Angeles, Bryce Canyon, San Francisco and Yosemite. Perfect if you want to tick a lot of boxes.

You can explore America’s Deep South on this Jewels of Georgia and South Carolina escorted coach tour. Starting in Atlanta, you’ll visit Martin Luther King’s early home, the birthplace of Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind, and the sandy shores of Myrtle Beach.

Texas is almost a country in itself. This 14-day escorted tour visits Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Houston along with Lafayette and New Orleans across the border in Louisiana. Another facet of the South can be explored on a tour of Louisiana plantation homes. See more coach tours.

If you love gardens, try this escorted tour of private and public gardens in the Hudson Valley. Or get your kicks on a coach tour of Route 66.

If you want a fly-drive the options are almost endless. September is a great month to see the autumn leaves of New England – try this selection of escorted coach tours. Further down the East coast, you could explore Virginia or the often-neglected New York State, or drive the Civil War route.

The Great Lakes region is the size of continental Europe and home to some of America’s most spectacular scenery, exciting cities and pretty lake shores. See the best bits on this 14-night Great Lakes Fly-Drive. Or head west to the wide open spaces of Colorado where we’ve found this great selection of fly-drive itineraries.

On the West coast, this 18-day California Explored fly-drive holiday hits all the right spots. You could take the ultimate three-week tour of America’s great National Parks or discover the Best of the Northwest on a 15-day drive out of Seattle. Head for Wyoming and South Dakota to visit Yellowstone National Park, Mount Rushmore, Cheyenne and Fort Collins.

If you don’t want to sit in a car or coach, how about cycling through the vineyards of Napa Valley or rafting through the Grand Canyon. You can play on some of the world’s greatest golf courses, or even get married.

If you’d rather hang out at the beach, you could rent a house in Cape Cod or check into a gorgeous hotel such as The Vanderbilt Grace in Newport, Rhode Island, or Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica.

September is an excellent time to visit Boston and New York. Why not take a tour to visit the locations of cult TV shows such as The Sopranos in New Jersey, and Sex and the City in New York.

Alaska is still warm enough to visit in September. This vast state will blow you away with its natural beauty and fascinating stories. One day you could be tracking grizzly bears, the next you could be on a cruise watching whales and icebergs.
