My Top Five Places To Visit in Germany

Everyone has different tastes and I suppose the top five places to visit in Germany could include 250 places in various orders depending on who compiled the top five list. As you'll see, my list isn't just a bullet list of famous destinations where you want to have your camera and a pocketful of souvenir buying money ready. My top list is of places in Germany that have granted me memories to last a lifetime.

My number one spot has to be Munich during Octoberfest. Do I really need to give the reasons for this selection? Many of my best experiences and most interesting times in Germany have revolved around Octoberfest. To be honest though, even on a bucket list of where to go anywhere in the whole world Ocktoberfest in Munich would have to be up in the top ten somewhere.

This number two place is a bit different due to it being located all over Germany. You should see any train station and I could add that it's best to visit a rail station is when an express train is headed for Munich during Octoberfest. The trains in general runs as smoothly as a Swiss watch. Anyone who has waited for airline delays will appreciate that when your train is scheduled for 11:53 you should be on board by 11:52 and 37 seconds when the doors will close. As the train quietly glides out of the station, you should be ready to meet some very interesting people.

My number three recommendation for places to visit in Germany is located somewhere South of Munich but I would have to really search for exactly where it is. There is an old monastery atop a Bavarian foothill of the Alps. This monastery overlooks a small lake and beside the lake there is huge mud pit. The sticky mud is super fun to roll around and wallow in. Locals claim the mud that is not just mineral dirt but rich in decomposing plant matter is healthy for the skin too. I really wish I could give you better directions but some people I met at Octoberfest took us there.

Number four here is a backup plan for number one but it's also memorable alone. The city of Frankfurt am Main has a historical area of walking streets and bars called Sachsenhausen. If you're in Germany at the wrong time of year and are missing out on Octoberfest, then definitely go to Sacsenhausen. I've had some great times there and I even vaguely recall some of them. The people you will be rubbing elbows with come from all over the world.

The final spot on my top five places to visit in Germany is located both in the present and the past. It can also be found almost anywhere in Germany. The directions are easy to follow. Buy a loaf of bread and a large sausage to make sandwiches. Pick up a bottle of wine, some beer, or whatever else you want to wash down your lunch. Drive or hike into the German countryside and look for an old castle ruin atop a hill. Explore and imagine yourself in medieval history. I suggest you will remember this day in Germany forever.
